The Social Network

This past weekend, three critics groups — those in LAFCA, SEFCA, and BSFC — announced their winners for the year in film. The Social Network walked away with the top prize from each group and looks poised to overcome the “unlikeability” factor that my pundits feared would weigh it down against happier fare like The King’s Speech.

Holding its first ceremony 36 years ago, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) is one of the older film-critics groups and considered one of the more prominent predictors leading up to the Oscars. Known for some of its more “unique” picks (as you will see below), and its choice of a runner-up in each category (also different from most of the regional awards), the LAFCA always adds something previously unheard-of to the Oscars recipe. Other big winners included the French/German miniseries Carlos, about Venezuelan Carlos the Jackal’s terrorist attack in Sudan in 1994, and The King’s Speech.
