The King’s Speech charms BIFA

The British Independent Film Awards, created in 1998, celebrated the best in independent British film on Sunday. Tom Hooper — perhaps Britain’s most underrated director, as his films, both on the small and big screens (Prime Suspect 6: The Last Witness, Elizabeth, Longford, John Adams, and The Damned United) have won multiple awards and/or unanimous critical praise — saw his newest critically acclaimed film, The King’s Speech, leave Sunday with five awards, the most for any film. Other winners included Carey Mulligan, the star of last year’s An Education, British thriller Monsters, and France’s Un prophête (A Prophet).
